no parking garage

I was out studying my theory site today, looking at the effect of the automobile on the neighborhood. I ran across this garage, in a parking lot. Not that exciting, except for the signs posted that say "No Parking". I laughed, and thought it was ironic....

It's nice that it's spring now, and all the birds are starting to come back. It makes the riverpark much more interesting, and noisy.

In an effort to figure out how my study neighborhood for theory has changed over the years I went to the library and figured out the Sanborn Maps. The books are huge and have a ton of information to use, once one figures out how to read it.

centennial trail bridge

I decided to take the long way downtown.. along the Centennial Trail. I've yet to decide if I like this footbridge across the Spokane River. Kinda funky, but reminds me of the 1980's postmodern movement. It would be interesting to find out who designed it... what they were thinking... and if I dated it correctly.

skywalk

Crossing one of the sky bridges from Riverpark Square into Crescent Court. I've never really appreciated how wide this street is downtown... kind of seems ridiculous with only a few cars on it right now. It does look like there's something to be said about curbside parking in Spokane though!

Back to Spokane today... the last thing I saw in Portland before getting into the Airport was the new Ikea store. Gotta love/hate box stores.

music millennium

A trip to Portland is not complete without a trip to Music Millennium to load up on way too much music. Tonight 'Daytime Volume' a local band was playing... and I really liked 'em, so I picked up their album! This one of the most eclectic places I've ever been in, in terms of inventory and occupants... totally normal to see some punk middle schoolers, old folks, and indie scenesters all at the same time. And I don't know what it is, but I love the smell of the place.

act theatre

I drove up to Seattle today to meet with Callison and ACT Theatre to learn about the Kreielsheimer building for my professional practice class. It was an awesome visit... learned a ton! Got a couple of "in's" at Callison now, in case I want to apply for a job in Seattle [hell no.] The theatre was amazing... I really want to see a play there... or act there! It's a fantastic place.

I got to go on a facility tour of Southwest Washington Medical Center, including a look around [and over] the roof!!! so this is the landscape, parking garage, a bit of the fountain, mill plain, and a bunch of residential. Vancouver

Today I flew home... pretty exciting! In this shot I see I-205, the Columbia river, the hospital, and my neighborhood! probably a lot more too come to think of it! It was a nice flight, very quick, and I think one of the first times it has been clear enough to see the urban area.

self portrait

So this is what happens when my style goes polar opposite. Straight hair, makeup, clunky jewelery, and a cute shirt.... not me huh? For some unknown reason, I thought it would be a great idea to fiddle around with my hair and makeup tonight. Guess it's something to do beside pack and clean before I go back to Vancouver tomorrow!

gallery

I was at studio this morning prepping for another studio critique tomorrow! Figured it would be best to review my old work, before designing a new board. My presentation consists of the left 4 boards adn the models underneath. I'm feeling confident again with my work and design... which is very promising. I got some great news this afteroon that helped.... I found out that I got into the Architecture Masters 1.5 year program @ wsu-spokane! I'm going to grad school this fall! Now I just have to keep working hard while I'm waiting to hear back from the other schools I've applied to.

yolk/stole and tassel

Today we went and got our caps and gowns for graduation [58 more days!]. When we were picking them up, they asked what our majors were, and after Gillian said 'architecture' they said 'wow!!! That's great! Congratulations!' I wonder if it's a shock that we made it? Regardless, I really like the tassel, it's pretty sleek.

I was reading a blog today about taking photos, and it offered the suggestion of viewing your subjects from above, rather than straight on. I don't think it's as effective as doing it with people, but it was sort of fun to stand on random furnature in my apartment and take pictures looking down. I won't lie, it was neat to be tall.

pullman charette

So there was an Arch/CM symposium today in Pullman. We went down for it in the morning, and got back this afternoon... it was interesting, and fun to work with people but I would have liked to be a bit more involved... we were in big groups of 10... almost too big, I really like the small size of the Spokane charettes! Anyway, James and I were on the same team, which was really cool. We spent most of the day designing new construction details for the staircase of the Villa Savoye. Interesting...
